Tips for Making Your Last-Minute Holiday Preparations Go Smoothly

We all hate the rush during this time of year. It’s supposed to be fun, but somehow, you may find yourself stressed and running out of time and ideas. Not to worry! You can find a way to get it all done and not feel overwhelmed with our tips and tricks for making this holiday season easier for you.

When hosting your own party, don’t forget photos! More often than not, the host or hostess is so busy mingling that there are just not enough party photos taken. Ask a close friend to be the photographer for the middle hour of your party – the time when most of your guests are there and the festivities are in full swing!

Don’t be caught empty-handed! Stock up on a case of great, budget-friendly wine, several bags of festive sweet treats, simple ribbon and some holiday cards. Keep the stash in your garage or even in the trunk of your car, so that no matter where you’re headed, you have the perfect holiday gift for hostesses, hairdressers or even teachers.

Simplify the Cooking! Choose to make only one holiday treat this year that you can bake in a large batch. You can certainly bring the same baked item to both your office party and your children’s school festivities. Opt for cookies or brownies, which can be easily frozen in batches.

Volunteer to bring the cheese! If asked to bring an appetizer, a simple cheese plate is easy to assemble and is always a fan favorite. Simply purchase a sharp cheese (like Cheddar), a soft cheese (like Brie), and one that has a little visual interest such as a goat cheese rolled in nuts or havarti with dill. Two boxes of different crackers and grapes or strawberries are all you’ll need to complete the presentation. Feel free to ask a hostess for a serving plate when you arrive and arrange the spread on site!

Be Prepared for Tipping. Have envelopes prepared ahead of time for your postal service person, garbage collector, babysitter, housekeeper, etc. Keep them ready to go so you are not rushing around looking for your wallet when the mail truck arrives on December 23rd! Also a great idea to keep a box of holiday cards and a pen in your car. Coffee shop gift cards are always a fan favorite – purchase a handful to have just in case. You can always save them for next year or use them yourself!

Buy stamps for NEXT year. If you opt for Forever stamps, you can buy an extra roll or two to eliminate the lines at the post office next year!

Check the Weather. No need to change your holiday outfit the hour before you are set to leave for a party (or, worse, the hour before your guests are set to arrive)! Check the weather now for up to 10 days ahead. That way, you will be able to plan your attire ahead of time!

Five Simple Tips to Make Your Thanksgiving Even More Festive!

This Thanksgiving, you will certainly get to enjoy some of your classic time-honored traditions. Some families have recipes they’ve used for years. Others always gather at a particular family member’s home. Others make traditions of inviting friends over who may be far from family. No matter what your holiday traditions are, we at Talk of the Town are happy to bring you a few new tips that might bring new traditions to your Thanksgiving.

Play “Guessing Thanks!” Instead of going around the table and asking everyone to say what they are thankful for, invite guests to write what they are thankful for on a piece of paper and have everyone pick one out of a bowl to read. Then, you and your guests get to guess who wrote it!

Incorporate a centerpiece that’s made with items you find in your own yard! Go outside and you’ll see the most beautiful leaves, pinecones, bunches of pine needles and nuts all around. Why not gather what you can use to decorate your table with the beautiful and natural items you and your family collect at home? This is a great way to not only save money, but it also allows you to really show your gratitude for all you have and the natural world around you!

Change up the menu, but just a little! A great way to change up the routine is to swap out just one or two usual dishes for something new. Always do sweet potatoes? Why not substitute mashed potatoes this year? If you are not sure you want to give up a tradition, you can always add a new dish and ask guests to tell you which they prefer. You might be surprised that you’ve started a new tradition!

Give Kids Something to Do! In addition to helping with the cooking, you can make children a part of the Thanksgiving meal by asking them to help you set the table. Another great way to involve children in the preparation is to ask them to make place cards for your guests. Younger kids can decorate them with leaves and a glue stick, and older kids can write guests’ names. Serving buffet style? Instead of place cards, have kids create and decorate menu cards to put in front of each dish. Also, kids love to put on performances! Ask the children at your event to create a Thanksgiving skit to showcase their talents!

Make Doing the Dishes Fun! Left with a kitchen full of dishes and platters and everyone else sitting in the living room? Pour yourself a glass of wine, turn on some music and invite just one or two guests you didn’t get to talk to at dinner to join you in the kitchen to clean up. This will be a fun and easy way to get the clean up done and enjoy the company of anyone you might have missed spending time with at the table!
